Keeping a battery alive through winter
Most motorcycle batteries do not die of old age but of three months standing still. The remedy costs the price of a tank of fuel and takes five minutes to set up.

Why a battery dies when parked
A lead battery self-discharges, the faster the colder it gets, and the on-board electronics keep drawing a little even with the ignition off. Below a certain state of charge, sulphate crystallises on the plates and never becomes active again: the lost capacity is lost for good, even after a full recharge.
Lead, AGM, gel, lithium: not the same charger
Each technology needs a different end-of-charge voltage. A lead charger used on a lithium battery can take it beyond its limit and trip its protection circuit, or worse. Check the marking on the battery and pick a charger that explicitly lists the matching mode, rather than a universal unit with no setting.
A maintenance charger, not a fast charger
A maintenance charger watches the voltage and only sends current when it drops; it can stay connected all winter. A fast charger is for bringing a flat battery back in a few hours and is not meant to stay in place. Connect the maintainer before the battery weakens: it maintains, it does not resurrect.
Disconnect or leave in place
If you connect a maintainer, leave the battery in place: it is simpler and the circuit stays powered. Without one, disconnect the negative terminal first and store the battery dry, cool but frost-free, recharging it once a month. A battery stored directly on a cold floor discharges faster.
Signs it is already beyond saving
A swollen case, a rotten-egg smell, a voltage that falls back below twelve volts a few hours after a full charge, or a starter that fades on the second attempt: in all four cases the battery will not come back. Replace it before it strands you far from home, and recycle the old one at a collection point or a dealer.
These guides give general bearings. They do not replace your machine's workshop manual, which alone gives exact torque figures and wear limits.
